04/24 (T)—Stand Up for a Cat Named Melvin—2:30PM at the Johnson County Courthouse, Iowa City, IA.A police complaint says Gibson S. Neblett, 25, abused a cat named Melvin (living in a home in North Liberty) starting in August (or earlier in 2016) through September 30, 2016. The complaint states that the cat's owner told police Neblett was the only person with Melvin when the injuries occurred. North Liberty police say Neblett has admitted to beating the cat.
The complaint states that on September 3, 2016, Melvin was taken to a vet “dragging his hind limbs and panting.” X-rays revealed rib fractures in various stages of healing and hip-joint fractures that required surgery. In addition, the complaint says that Melvin also suffered severe soft-tissue damage to his right hind leg and bruising throughout the underside of his body. Police say the cat is expected to fully recover.
Police charged Neblett with first-offense animal torture—an aggravated misdemeanor. He faces a prison sentence of up to two years or a jail sentence not to exceed one year. On 03/27/17 Neblett pled guilty as charged.
We hope you will stand up for Melvin at Neblett's sentancing. Over the years there have been other animal welfare cases brought against individuals in Johnson County that seemed to have had good evidence (my opinion) that resulted in weak wrist slaps (again, my opinion). Perhaps our presence on 04/24/17 will display our concern to the courtroom.
Many thanx to everyone who has shown up twice for Melvin on 1/19/17 (Neblett's original court date) and 03/28/17 (his continuance court date.
